The Most Telltale Signs You Need a New Refrigerator
A quality refrigerator can last many years, which is why it’s often difficult to tell when you need to start looking into buying a new fridge for your home. Even if your refrigerator hasn’t completely died on you yet, there are a number of indications that could signal it’s beginning to wear out. Here are a few of the most common signs that you may need to replace your refrigerator in the near future.
Rapidly Spoiling Food
One of the most obvious signs that your refrigerator is about to break down is when you notice food spoiling much faster than it normally would. Or conversely, if you put a six-pack of beer in the fridge and it takes unusually long to get cold. Fridges that take longer to cool food or cannot maintain their temperatures use up more energy than they should. That means you’re spending more on energy bills and wasting food that you’ve had to throw away due to a faulty refrigerator.
Too Much Condensation
Does your fridge look like it just ran a marathon downtown in the middle of a heat wave? It could be that your refrigerator isn’t cooling properly, which will cause it to “sweat” more condensation than is normal. If you notice this, you will want to be on the lookout for signs of mildew, mold, or water leakage around the rubber sealing of your fridge door.
A Hot Running Motor
It’s not unusual to feel a warmer temperature when you place your hand on the back of your refrigerator. However, excess heat is a clear sign that your fridge is not right. If you notice your refrigerator is unusually warm, call a repair technician to inspect your coils. The coils in the back of a fridge are insulated and should keep you from feeling too much heat. That said, if your fridge is especially old, it may be a better investment to simply buy a new one.
Your Freezer is a Winter Wonderland
While a Freezer is obviously supposed to keep food in a frozen state, it’s not normal for you to have to climb a mini Mt. Everest just to reach a bag of green beans. If this happens to you, the first thing you should do is defrost your freezer. If the problem continues, it’s time to consider buying a new unit. Newer freezers tend to have an automatic defrosting feature.
