Choosing a Gas or Electric Range

Gas or electric range? How do you know which one is right for you?

When it comes to creating holiday feasts for friends and family, your cooktop is perhaps the most important part of your kitchen. With so many different models and types of ranges available, it can be quite a challenge to narrow down your choices. In this blog, we’ll tackle the most frequently asked question: should I choose an electric or gas style range?

Electric Ranges

Electric ranges have a number of advantages. First, they are much easier to clean. Smooth-top electric ranges also provide a more stable area for pots and pans than stoves with coil elements or grates on gas stoves. You also won’t have to worry about oil pooling on one side of a pan with a smooth top electric range. Typically, electric ranges come with a wider set of optional features, such as fans and grillers.

The disadvantage to using an electric stovetop is that if the power goes out, you won’t be able to cook with it. Ceramic cooktops can also shatter if you drop heavy items on them, and are susceptible to scratches from cast-iron pots and pans.

Gas Ranges

The primary benefit of a gas range is that the flame lights immediately, providing you with instant heat that can be controlled with greater precision. Furthermore, when the flame turns off you can keep your food on the range without worrying about overcooking since the heating element cools quickly. You can also save money on electricity by using gas rather than an electric range.

Gas cooktops tend to be a little more difficult to clean, as it involves moving the cast-iron burner grates. Each burner has moving parts that can accidentally be knocked out of place and create an uneven flame the next time you turn it on. If you have an open window, wind can diminish the flame on a gas cooktop.

There is no “correct” answer when it comes to choosing a gas or electric range, but it’s always a good idea to consider all the factors beyond simply cost. Weigh all the pros and cons and make a decision based on what you think will work best for your cooking needs.
