Questions to Ask When Buying Your Brand New Dishwasher

If you haven’t purchased a dishwasher in the last 5 to 10 years, you probably don’t know what you should be looking for. There have been many modern advances and options added to dishwashers within the last decade or so that you’ll need to be aware of before you buy. Most people arrive at the showroom with two questions: “Is it quiet?” and “Does it clean dishes?” Although these certainly are good things to look for in a dishwasher, you’ll want to consider several other options as well for your brand new dishwasher.

Dishwasher Questions to Ask

If you haven’t purchased a dishwasher in the last 5 to 10 years, you probably don’t know what you should be looking for. There have been many modern advances and options added to dishwashers within the last decade or so that you’ll need to be aware of before you buy.

What You Should Be Looking for in a Dishwasher

  1. Filter or Disposal?

Most brands make dishwashers with both options, but it’s good to know which you prefer ahead of time. Filter dishwashers collect the soil in a filter that must be cleaned out once every few weeks, but are generally quieter. Disposal dishwashers grind up the waste and dispose of it so you don’t have to, but can be louder.

  1. Plastic or Stainless Steel?

Because plastic is porous, it will absorb stains and odors over time. It can be easily cleaned by running an empty load with a white vinegar mix, but in contrast, stainless steel requires no regular maintenance. Stainless steel is more expensive, but it also can withstand higher heat levels than plastic.

  1. How Many Options?

Your standard dishwasher will have 2 to 4 options ranging from Light, Normal, Heavy, and Auto. The majority of people don’t need more than that, but there are dishwashers out there with several convenient options to make life easier, such as the following examples:

  • Half load – Conserve water and energy by telling your dishwasher only to focus on the top or bottom rack
  • Sanitize – This option uses a higher than average heat to sanitize your dishes as well as clean them. If you have kids, this feature is great for cleaning baby bottles and other items that are full of bacteria.
  • Delicate – Breaking out grandma’s antique china? This setting uses a lower heat and lighter pressure to protect your valuable items.
