Gas or Electric Ranges: Which is Best for My Kitchen?
Remodeling your kitchen this fall? One of the most important appliances you need in your kitchen is your range. It’s an essential tool for just about all of your cooking needs – from boiling a pot of water to baking the Thanksgiving turkey! Your range relies on either gas or electric for power. A kitchen remodel is a great time to reassess which type of range is right for your kitchen. Both gas and electric ranges have their advantages and disadvantages, but you want to be able to make an informed decision. Let’s take a look and decide what will work best for you!
Gas Ranges: The Pros and Cons
Gas ranges are the best choice for people who use their stovetops frequently. If you cook a lot, you’ll appreciate the instant and constant flame that can be visually adjusted. You won’t have to wonder if you remembered to turn your stove off or if it’s on the right setting – it’s obvious! You’ll be able to cook food quickly and more evenly. Also, if you’re already using natural gas in your home, your operating and energy costs will be much lower than if you were using an electric range.
However, gas ranges generally tend to be more expensive to purchase and hook up in your home, especially if you don’t already have a gas line going to your kitchen. The gas in a gas range also has the potential to leak out if you accidentally leave the burner on, but unlit.
Electric Ranges: The Pros and Cons
If style and appearance matters most to you, an electric range with a sleek glass cooktop might be the best choice. The glass top makes it easy to wipe up spills and keep your kitchen sparkly clean. Electric stoves are easy to use, generally less expensive to purchase and install, and offer the most stable work surface for pots and pans. Amateur cookers and those who don’t spend too much time cooking will benefit from electric ranges.
The disadvantage of electric ranges is that they cook more slowly and the glass tends to stain fairly easily. Electric ranges also will not be operable during power outages and are less energy-efficient than gas ranges.
