How to Make a Baked Potato in the Microwave
If you’ve ever been in a rush to put dinner on the table, a microwaved baked potato could have been the perfect solution. It takes just over five minutes to cook a single potato in the microwave, and you can add a wide variety of toppings to tailor the taste to your liking. Add some chili or go loaded style with bacon and cheese. Here’s a few tips for making this quick and easy staple in the microwave.
Russet potatoes (the larger ones with dark brown skin and few eyes) are typically the best for microwaved baked potatoes. Keep in mind that larger potatoes may need an extra minute to cook all the way through. Before you toss them in the microwave, make sure to scrub the potatoes thoroughly under running water and then pat them dry. Trim away any unwanted blemishes with a paring knife. Some people also opt to rub their potatoes with a little bit of olive oil, salt, and pepper before cooking to bring out the flavor.
Poke Your Potatoes
While this method of making a baked potato is about as straightforward as it gets, there is one thing you absolutely must keep in mind: poke holes in your potato! Use a fork or knife to poke holes into the potato four or five times on both sides. This will allow steam to escape while it’s in the microwave. If you don’t poke your potatoes, they could end up exploding from all the pent-up steam.
Go for Gold
If you aren’t completely satisfied with your microwaved baked potato and have some extra time to spare, baking in the oven will help you achieve a crisper, more roasted texture. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit while your potato is Microwaving. Once the potato is cooked through you can quickly transfer it to the oven and leave it in until it’s as crisp as you’d like it to be.
