Cleaning and Sanitizing a Kitchen

Cleaning has always been an important chore for homeowners to keep up with in their homes, and especially in the kitchen. Kitchens need to stay clean due to the food preparation that we do there every day. The act of cleaning the kitchen has taken on a new importance in recent times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many homeowners are beginning to educate themselves on the importance of sanitizing as well. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a two-step process that they recommend to properly clean and sanitize a kitchen – this method is commonly used in commercial kitchens and you can utilize it within your own kitchen as well.

The first step is to clean the kitchen first. Cleaning is the act of removing visible dirt from surfaces such as countertops, cooktops, sinks, appliance finishes, and more. The best way to do this is use warm, soapy water and kitchen towels to wash down these surfaces before wiping dry with a single-use paper towel. Cleaning also helps to remove some bacteria from the surfaces of your kitchen, so you should run your kitchen towels through the laundry frequently using the hot cycle. While cleaning removes some bacteria such as salmonella, it doesn’t kill it off completely, which is why you should also plan on sanitizing your kitchen surfaces as well.

Sanitizing destroys harmful bacteria in the kitchen and is most effective when done right after cleaning surfaces. There are quite a number of different sanitize solutions out there on the market, but you can also make your own easily by mixing 1 tablespoon of liquid chlorine bleach with 1 gallon of water. The proper way to sanitize a surface is to spray the solution and then wipe dry with a paper towel. You’ll need to ensure that the surface is completely dry before using it again (this includes your kitchen sinks). If you are using a store-bought sanitizer, check the label for further instructions – some require you to rinse the surfaces with clean water after you sanitize them.
