How to Run a Refrigerator from Your Hot Garage
When the summer heat and humidity strikes it’s important to keep cool. A refrigerator in the garage is a great way to store cool beverages while adding some extra space and convenience to your home. Most garages, however, aren’t climate controlled and a sweltering summer can put a lot of stress on a fridge. Here are a few things you can do to keep your garage refrigerator in good shape and the energy bills down.
Keep it Full
A refrigerator in a hot garage must constantly fight the ambient temperature to keep everything cool inside. It may come as a bit of a surprise that a well stocked refrigerator runs better. Cold air escapes faster in an empty refrigerator. A fully stocked fridge leaves less room for warm air, and helps the refrigerator to maintain its temperature when you open it on a hot day. If you don’t need to use all the space in your refrigerator, consider filling it with gallons of water.
Keep it Charged
Garages are often not wired for refrigerators the way kitchens are. If your garage doesn’t have the correct electrical hookup then your refrigerator won’t receive enough power, and will lead to further stress to produce cold air during the summer. A refrigerator should be equipped with a 115 volt, 60 Hz, AC-only electrical outlet. Consult an electrician if you are unsure whether or not your garage has the proper electrical wiring for a refrigerator.
Keep it Cool
If your garage regularly exceeds 110 degrees fahrenheit then it’s not a good place for a refrigerator. Extremely hot conditions could cause your refrigerator to burn out due to overuse. Consider finding ways to keep the temperature down in warmer garages. Insulation, supplemental air conditioning, fans and vents will assist in maintaining a cool garage. Cover up windows to avoid heat from the sun and check for door and window leaks.
Be Careful of Perishables
Placing a refrigerator in extreme conditions always comes with the risk of operational failure. Even if you take proper precautions, it’s a good idea to leave a garage refrigerator for handling non perishable foods. A garage refrigerator is excellent for beer, beverages and other pantry goods that won’t spoil easily. Leaving out food items that can’t handle the heat can help you avoid cleaning up a mess.
