Washing Machines: Top Load or Front Load?

If you’re in the market for a new washing machine, one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is if you want a top load or front load machine. When you begin shopping, you’ll find that the market for each type is about the same. So how do you decide which type of washing machine is right for you?

Washing Machines

If you’re in the market for a new washing machine, one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is if you want a top load or front load machine.

Front Load Washing Machines

  • Advantages

Front load washing machines usually have a larger capacity and use a lot less electricity and water than most top loaders. They are also gentler on your clothes, and the larger capacity means you can wash bulky items like blankets and curtains. These days, everyone wants to save money wherever they can, and an energy and water-saving washing machine is a great way to cut costs on your bills. Many front load washing machines also have steam cycles that kill bacteria and germs and refresh your clothing as well as clean it.

  • Disadvantages

Front loaders often can have standing water left in the gasket, causing mildew to grow. The gasket should be wiped out after each use. They also tend to spin faster than top loaders, which can cause noisy vibrations in some machines without vibration guarantees. Be sure to check for a reversible door hinge also depending on the layout of your laundry room, as many are only offered left-hinged.

Top Load Washing Machines

  • Advantages

Hands down, the biggest advantage to a top load washing machine is being able to pause the wash cycle after it has started. This is advantageous if you need to add items or search for items that may have been left in pockets. Top loaders also have shorter wash times, and it’s a lot easier to load and unload when you don’t have to bend over. If initial price is important to you over long-term savings, top load washing machines will be your best option.

  • Disadvantages

Simply put, top load washing machines just don’t clean as well as front loaders, and they require more water to cover all the clothes. This means that the money you save up front will eventually be lost in your utility bills. Top load machines are also harsher on clothes and can’t handle big items like comforters.
