New Appliance Shopping Guide
Whether you are equipping a brand new kitchen or you simply need to upgrade an old refrigerator or dishwasher, it’s important to take the time to make sure your replacement appliance will be an improvement upon its predecessor. To help make sure you choose the perfect appliance that is right for you, here’s a checklist of items to look for when you’re shopping.
Spend a week paying close attention to how you use the appliance you are planning to replace. Make a list of every feature you use and exactly how you use the appliance. For instance, if you are replacing your washer and dryer, make note of how big your laundry loads typically are and what features you tend to use. If you have matching timing cycles on your current washer and dryer, it may be difficult to adjust to a new washer and dryer that don’t have that feature.
After you’ve identified what you need in your new appliance, make another list of things you hate about your current appliance. If you could improve anything, what would it be? Would you prefer a quieter dishwasher? A lint trap in your dryer that’s easier to clean? Refrigerator doors that seal better? Identify anything that’s driving you crazy; now is you chance to get rid of those annoying disturbances with a carefully-selected new appliance.
You are the expert in deciding what style will suit your home. However, when it comes to the interior workings of an appliance, things can get a little complicated. Different appliances have different motors, compressors, insulation, and electronic sensors. It can be a lot to take in at once! Luckily, you can see which appliances are more energy efficient by looking for the Energy Star rating. Since appliances tend to make up 20 percent of a household’s monthly energy expenditure, it’s not only conscientious to the planet, but beneficial to your wallet to purchase Energy Star rated appliances.
Finally, be sure to take measurements! You can purchase the best dishwasher in the world, but if it doesn’t fit, you’ll be giving yourself a whole new to-do list. Also make sure to consider the space that will be taken up when you open the doors of your new appliance. After ensuring that your new appliance will fit in the space, take some time to measure your doors and hallways leading up to the room where the appliance will be installed. Nothing’s worse than getting a new appliance home and finding out that you can’t fit it through the doorway!
