Some Helpful Tips for Using Your Convection Oven
Categories: Cooking Tips & Recipes
Convection ovens are currently among the trendiest appliances for kitchens. Not long ago, they were a rarity. But with their soaring popularity, you can expect to find a convection oven in almost every kitchen these days. If you’re unsure about how best to use your new convection oven, boost your confidence with these helpful tips. Now you too can have professional quality baked goods in your own home!
How Does a Convection Oven Work?
The term convection oven comes from the convection setting, and not for the oven itself. Look for a setting on the control console. Once turned on, convection heat is being used. You might wonder what the difference is between convection heat and regular heat. Convection settings activate fans and vents. Hot air is then cycled in and out through the fans and vents. As a result, your food cooks faster than usual and will be evenly heated. The oven vents will also draw moisture out, leaving your food delightfully crispy and golden-brown.
You should also know that convection ovens can be powered by gas or by electricity. All of the wonderful advantages presented by both of these cooking methods still apply to convection ovens.
Better Baking with Convection Ovens
Now that we have established what distinguishes convection ovens from all the rest, let’s learn about better baking methods with these ovens.
Bring the Temperature Down: First off, you will want to set the temperature to 25 degrees lower than the temperature your recipe calls for.
See If the Food is Done: Always check your food. See if it is done early, due to the effectiveness of convection cooking. Judge the readiness based on sight and smell rather than how much time is left on the cooking timer. Once you become more comfortable with your convection oven, you will be able to guess when certain foods will be ready.
Avoid Overfilling the Oven: It’s important to let the air flow freely. If the airflow inside the oven is interrupted, your food will not cook or bake as easily. Feel free to use multiple racks in the oven, just don’t overload the racks.
Try Baking Sheets and Roasting Pans: Baking sheets without rims and pans with lower sides will allow more air to reach your food. Your food will become even crispier.
