Does Your Washing Machine Need Washing?
When you think of your washing machine, your first thought is most likely the scent and comforting warmth of freshly washed and dried clothing. Laundry is supposed to have a clean and pleasant scent, and washing machines themselves an agent of cleanliness. So, what do you do when the script has flipped and you notice an unpleasant odor coming from your washing machine? And why does this happen? To learn more about washing machine odor and how to correct it, read on.
Why Your Front-Load Washing Machine Has An Odor
While front-load washing machines are superior in that they are more efficient, and do a better job washing clothing while being gentler, they can pose a pesky odor problem. This occurs because these more efficient washers use less water, and cannot always remove all of the soap you put in to wash your clothing. As your washing machine is warm and moist, the excess soap scum becomes the ideal place for bacteria, mold, and mildew to flourish. Water can also get trapped under the gasket, making another icky odor breeding ground.
Get Rid Of Washing Machine Odor
Mix ¼ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of water. Then add this solution to your washer’s detergent container. Once this is done, pour two cups of white vinegar into the drum and run the cycle on a high heat. Be sure to do this without any clothing in the washer. The baking soda and vinegar will work together to kill any bacteria, mold, or mildew. They will also kill any unpleasant odors. Following this, scrub any difficult spots with a mixture of vinegar and water and a rough kitchen sponge. You can repeat this once a month for prevention purposes and keep your washer nice and clean.
Tips To Keep Your Washing Machine Fresh
If you own a front-loader, you should always use detergents especially designed for high-efficiency machines. That old school detergent you have been using for years will produce more suds than your new machine can handle. This leads to a buildup of soap scum which becomes mold, mildew, bacteria, and odor. Keep your drum dry and your gasket clean.
