Which Type of Microwave is Right for You?
Whether you’re rushing to pull dinner together or just want to warm up leftover pizza, a microwave is certainly a kitchen essential. If you’re looking to install a microwave in your kitchen, there are a number of types you’ll want to consider first. Depending on your kitchen space, you can select from countertop, over-the-range, or built-in microwaves. Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind when choosing a new microwave.
Countertop microwaves are particularly popular among consumer for their affordable price range and easy installation. They can simply be plugged into an ordinary outlet if it’s dedicated to the microwave. Countertop microwaves also offer more portability and are easy to take with you when you move. The downside to countertop microwaves, however, is that they will eat up valuable kitchen real estate. Keep in mind that the size of the unit doesn’t always translate to usable cooking space, so you will want to find a model with adequate capacity for the available space.
Built-in microwaves are designed specifically to be built into surrounding cabinetry or wall units. A microwave drawer can also be placed beneath a countertop, if you would prefer to keep it out of sight. A built-in microwave may be more expensive, but will imbue your kitchen with a clean, stylish look while also saving you tons of countertop space. If you don’t have the exact amount of shelf space to perfectly fit a microwave, a trim kit can be used to fill in gaps and create a more integrated look.
An over-the-range microwave is just that, a microwave that sits over the kitchen range. These microwaves combine with a ventilation hood to save countertop space and create a streamlined look. The ventilation also provides a way to waft away smoke, steam and cooking odors, so that you can keep your kitchen fresh and comfortable. Over-the-range microwave units are sometimes more expensive and may also require professional installation. When selecting an over-the-range microwave, keep in mind the kind of range you have or are thinking of purchasing. The OTR ventilation system may not be capable to withstand the BTU output of your range and an actual ventilation hood maybe required.
